About The GAO Employees Organization

GAO Analysts, concerned with deteriorating pay, benefits and working conditions, determined that the best way to reverse this trend was to organize a union to:

• Bargain collectively with GAO;
• Seek Congressional support for pay, benefits, and retirement;
• Represent Analysts’ individual employment rights.

After a thorough investigation of alternatives, GAO Analysts contacted the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) -- a labor union representing over 80,000 employees in the Federal, Public and Private sectors, in the U.S. and Canada.  IFPTE members work in primarily white collar, professional jobs, including all engineering disciplines, a wide variety of scientific and research professions, lawyers and administrative judges, economists, environmental officers, and urban planners, among others.

IFPTE is active in federal court litigation and Congressional advocacy on behalf of its Federal Employee members, who make up one third of the Union.  IFPTE has a proven track record in collective bargaining for white collar professionals, especially merit pay and promotion systems.  See Pay for Performance [PDF].

IFPTE already represents the Congressional Research Service employees, whose employment interests are very similar to ours. Visit the Congressional Research Employees Association - IFPTE Local 75 website.  For more information about IFPTE visit www.ifpte.org.
